Your Impact

Just this year, your generosity made it possible for families who are impacted by a serious mental illness/brain disease in a loved one to receive 24/7 access to resources and programs.

I’d especially like you to understand the new set of skills for families that increase their effectiveness in integrating their loved ones back into the fabric of the family.

A core issue that families face is how to integrate a family member with SMI into the family. Roles and rituals are at the heart of how a family functions and these require changes when a family member has SMI or any other life-changing chronic illness.  Roles refer to the many hats that each family member wears in order to benefit the whole family.  For example, one person can be mother, aunt, daughter, family manager, friend.  The same is true for the others in the family.  Since the onset of SMI is typically in the transition age years, just when a child is transitioning into an independent adult, this can throw a family off-course.  Activities that were previously not done or left long ago, re-emerge. After all, the brain is compromised and there may need to be adaptations for learning, chores, activities of daily living, etc.  When an adult has an episode, as can occur when triggered by such stressful events as hormone changes, loss, or other disaster, acute intervention is required, adaptability amongst the group, and long-term solutions.

Your investment in families is an investment in

Together we’ll keep the good going until every family is whole including their loved ones with serious mental illnesses.

With gratitude,

Mara Briere, MA CFLE
